Boston Scientific announced Sept. 8 that it has restored remote monitoring activation capability for cardiac devices following an Aug. 25 cybersecurity incident.
The medtech company said healthcare professionals can now resume activation and pairing for cardiac device implant communicators and insertable cardiac monitor remote monitoring.
The network disruption had blocked new remote monitoring activations but did not affect implantable device function, programmer communication with implanted devices, or monitoring for cardiac devices already enrolled in remote monitoring before the outage began, according to the company.
Boston Scientific said all analyses to date indicate the cyberattack’s impact was isolated to select internal infrastructure, and it has seen no indication of unauthorized activity in its environment since Aug. 25. CrowdStrike and other third-party cybersecurity experts remain involved in the investigation, which is ongoing.
The company also reported broader operational progress: Its distribution network has been substantially restored, major distribution centers are processing and shipping products at or above normal levels, all sterilization facilities are operational, and manufacturing has resumed across most global facilities.
The Aug. 25 incident initially disrupted Boston Scientific’s ability to process and ship customer orders worldwide, affecting a company whose cardiac rhythm management portfolio includes pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators and insertable cardiac monitors used across U.S. hospitals and health systems.
