IA Capital Group, a New York-based venture capital investment firm focused on financial technology and insurance technology, has confirmed the first close of its Inter-Atlantic Opportunity Fund I.
The investment vehicle, the firm’s 11th fund since its establishment in 2000, has secured QBE Insurance Group as its anchor investor through QBE Ventures, the insurer’s corporate venture development and investment division.
The fund has been established to pursue investment opportunities among more mature fintech and insurtech businesses at a time when some traditional venture capital investors and corporate investment programmes are scaling back their involvement in these markets. IA Capital Group believes this shift has created opportunities to provide financing to established businesses that have developed revenue streams but may face fewer options when seeking additional capital or liquidity for existing shareholders.
IA Capital Group stated that the fund will concentrate on businesses operating in fintech, insurtech and related industries, with a particular emphasis on companies that have reached Series B funding or later stages of development.
The investment strategy incorporates both direct capital commitments and the purchase of existing equity holdings. According to the firm, this structure will allow it to participate in new funding rounds while acquiring shares from investors looking to exit or reduce their positions, including corporate venture capital operations that have withdrawn from certain investment activities.

IA Capital Group said it will identify potential investments through its existing portfolio, relationships with founders and connections across its network of investment funds and institutional backers.
The fund’s investment activities are overseen by a team led by General Partner Ravi Shah. The firm confirmed that two investments have already been completed, involving Panacea and Aurora.
Panacea is a US financial services platform catering to healthcare professionals, including doctors, dentists and veterinarians, as well as their businesses. Aurora, meanwhile, is a UK-based technology company providing algorithm-driven solutions to automate underwriting processes within the property and casualty insurance market.
“We believe there is a significant opportunity to build a more flexible model for corporate venture investing,” added Andy Lerner, Managing Partner at IA Capital Group. “We bring infrastructure, network, and investment experience to partners seeking meaningful exposure to innovation, complementing what they already do well.”
IA Capital Group explained that QBE Insurance Group’s involvement through QBE Ventures is designed to operate alongside the insurer’s established corporate investment activities rather than replace its existing approach.
QBE Ventures currently prioritises direct investments and strategic commercial relationships with businesses whose technologies and services can contribute to the wider insurance group’s operational objectives.
According to IA Capital Group, participation in the Opportunity Fund will enable QBE Ventures to gain exposure to a broader range of companies and transactions, including investments that may not align with the requirements of a direct corporate venture capital arrangement.
The partnership also reflects QBE Ventures’ continued interest in supporting businesses with potential applications across the insurer’s international operations.
“A number of corporate venture programs have retrenched over the past few years, often because the investments were disconnected from the core business and strategy,” commented James Orchard, Chief Executive Officer of QBE Ventures. “Our thesis has always been to work closely with our business and invest in strategic partnerships that have the potential to significantly accelerate the delivery of our core priorities. The Opportunity Fund complements this approach – it lets us move quickly and enables us to back strong companies as other investors step back.”
IA Capital Group highlighted its longstanding involvement in the financial services investment market, having established its first fund in 2000 before developing strategic investment arrangements with insurance companies from 2014 onwards.
The firm reported that its existing fund management operations include three investment vehicles supported by multiple limited partners, involving 23 insurance companies. It also oversees two funds established for individual institutional investors, Prudential Financial and Goldman Sachs Alternatives.
The launch of Inter-Atlantic Opportunity Fund I adds another investment vehicle to IA Capital Group’s portfolio, extending its activities into transactions involving later-stage businesses and existing shareholder interests.
While the company has confirmed QBE Insurance Group’s role as anchor investor and identified the fund’s first two investments, it has not provided details of the capital secured during the initial close or the total amount it intends to raise.
